MacSaber: Turn Your Mac Into A Jedi Weapon

20 May 2006 | By Ian in Apple, Development, MacSaber, Made by isnoop

UPDATE: Version 1.1 is now available.

Now that you’ve spent entirely too much money on your fancy sudden motion sensor equipped Mac laptop, I predict you’ll soon be swinging it around like a loon.

Introducing MacSaber. Using your Mac’s sudden motion sensor, this software turns your computer into a Jedi weapon almost worthy of taking on the real thing by making authentic lightsaber sound effects. It senses speed for the lightsaber movement sounds and acceleration for different levels of striking sounds.

This beta is not yet compatible with the motion sensors in older Mac laptops, but I understand you can move the window arond to get the idea.

Update: Thanks go to Sak from Lot23 for the fancy icon!

  32. Careful guys. Don’t let it slip from your hands during a swing…

  33. This is great!

It would be cool if it could interface with the IR port, so when two macs’ IR port suddenly found each other, it would sound like two sabers meeting.
That way, you could have an opponent use a TV-remote control, and it would make a sound when the “sabers” met.

  63. Hey ! Pretty cool !
What about making it working with a mouse ? I’m sure my PowerMac would like it ;-)

BTW : stuff like this one are fine on a Mac. They’re not whished on a Microsoft PC : it’s already too noisy…

I’d like MacSaber to have a separate volume control. I’d also suggest a sensitivity setting, so that we can avoid slinging our laptops into the wall. I enjoy the numeric feedback.

I walk around a lot at work with my laptop open and this thing will make people notice. Could you allow me to open or close the Saber from the dock icon?

I’ll be watching for the release version soon, my wife’s waiting w/ her credit card now…

Anyway, for those of you worried about HD problems, you shouldn’t. The sensor doesn’t just register sudden motions, it measures any kind of movement, even tiny ones. Only when it measures a movement that could damage the HD does it park the heads. So there is no worry.

The resulting binary should automatically work with any Mac that has an SMS. I can only test on a MBP though because that’s all I have. It currently gets the roll/tilt readings that MacSaber uses but I can’t seem to decode the force bits. I can see the data changing but I must be using the wrong offset/lengths. Open System Profiler and look under “Hardware” right after the Serial Number:
    Sudden Motion Sensor:

MacSabre only works on a limited set of *Books at this time, although they don’t say which, and I would have assumed it would work on yours. It doesn’t work on mine:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15″
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,6
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz

Mine doesn’t say which version of Motion sensor:

    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15″
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,8
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz

    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.6f0
    Serial Number: W85448RESX2
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled

And in MacSaber, although it makes the whooshing and bzzzzzzzzz sounds, the Roll: Left 1835 Tilt: -2070 – and these values don’t change at all. What about right roll?

And why, even though in System Profiler it says my SMS is enabled, does console.log keep recording “No motion sensor available”.

There must be something to grep somewhere that gives info on Roll and Tilt, which varies in the different ‘Books and that MacSaber gets wrong.

I want my MacSaber working :(

Of course, practicalities are as nothing when compared to silliness and fun. Mac Saber has to be probably the most useless app ever (it makes silly sounds), but surely and paradoxically, the best thing a geek could ever want. Dude. I’m a Jedi. With a Mac Book. Bring. It. On. sorry. Got all distracted. The other is Seismac, which shows shudders and movements as detected by the sensors. Now, when I was a kid, we used to occasionally draw charts like this sat in the back of the car – running a pen over a piece of paper as the car moved. We saw it on Why Don’t You? or somesuch, and it amused my brother and I immensely. So now my computer does it. Marvellous. its faken annoying everyone bashes msft for bundling IE and WMP. but nobody has problem when apple forces people to buy overpriced hardwares from apple. even when they force people to buy music from itunes and ituens only. apple should be tried in crminal court before microsoft. at least MSft is not forcing people.

    [MacSaber](http://i…

  305. matthk: I don’t see why it would be dangerous at all. The whole point is for SMS to kick in while your hard drive is “spinning away”–to save your hard drive, not destroy it. It simply parks the heads–nothing more, nothing less. Having SMS kick in will only slow down your disk access briefly, but it won’t cause any damage.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but if you do please provide a reference backing up your claim.

  306. [...] Some new Apple Mac laptops and IBM Thinkpads have sudden motion sensors inside, which park the hard drive heads in the event of a fall which protects your data from being damaged. It’s being used for all sorts of things, including a way to turn your Mac into a Jedi weapon. It’s surprising how many fun uses for the sensors there are. Why not have an actual input device designed for this sort of thing? The acceleratometers (gyroscopes) can’t be too expensive now that Apple and IBM are including them in nearly all laptops. I guess that’s what Gyration has tried to do, but those are used just as mouse pointers. You need fun apps like these before it’ll take off. This is a good idea from a Slashdot comment. Maybe we should just start putting in different types of random sensors in laptops that can pull data from the emediate environment and see what the hackers can do with them. Some suggestions: [...]

Gentle movements create the low hum and more sudden movements produce the electric crackle of two light sabres clashing. You can see this in action on YouTube. [...]

  386. This is awesome, I went to the mac store, because I don’t have a mac laptop, and put it on one of theirs. :P I shook it arround a little while still on the table and it made the noises.

I left the program running after I left (I didn’t pick it up or anything because that might scare them a little)

  387. [...] The wizzy motion sensors makes for some great fun. The practicality in it is that the MBP can park it’s hard disk, preventing data loss, if it’s dropped. Marvellous. Just need that mythical “homework completer” I wanted at school, and my childhood ambitions are complete. [...]

  397. [...] If you’re a Star Wars fan, check out MacSaber — software that uses the MacBook’s motion sensor to turn it “into a Jedi weapon almost worthy of taking on the real thing by making authentic lightsaber sound effects.” Download here. It senses speed for the lightsaber movement sounds and acceleration for different levels of striking sounds [...]

  398. [...] First up is a cool piece of software that turns your MacBook into a MacSaber. I still watch the original Star Wars trilogy on a monthly basis and like most guys my favorite part is the lightsaber fight scenes. I still make the sound effects for some reason, but who doesn’t? Want the software? I know you do, so get it here. [...]

  399. [...] The following idea was birthed from what could only be described as a drunken orgy between a Wii-mote, a Mac, and a Star Wars geek. The program’s creator took his existing app that uses the MacBook’s built-in tilt sensor to transform your computer into a lightsaber, tand took it one step further. Coupling that functionality with the data retrieved by the recently released DarwiinRemote, WiiSaber was born. Pair your Wii-mote with your Bluetooth-enabled Mac and swing it around to make authentic lightsaber sounds so you can finally live out your Star Wars kid Stephen Colbert fantasies. ps- Yeah, we tried it. It works great … just be sure you’re alone. [...]

  401. [...] Tag: Mac [...]

  413. Yeah… swinging your laptop around at high speeds in close proximity of other laptops may not be the safest activity for a $2000 computer, but it sure is lots of fun!

Thanks for the software.. macsaber developers. Maybe, an ancient knight, sword fighter version as well? I can see this going places: Sushi chef sounds, fencing noises, fighter pilots motion noises,
